Approximately 90 per cent of all children born deaf, are born into a hearing family. Among the many challenges faced by the deaf child and their family members, communication and being able to 'talk' to one another, becomes the biggest challenge.
Durham Deaf Services removes the communication barrier by providing a Deaf teacher to teach the entire family American Sign Language (ASL). We introduce all family members to the Deaf community, and for 12-weeks, our instruction and support allows them to learn in the privacy and comfort of their own home. Families are able to borrow materials from our lending library, and they're given an incredible opportunity to develop life-long skills and relationships within the Deaf/hearing environment.
